Cooked low and slow, the US-style barbecued NZ meats here are smoky, juicy and all around delicious. Also on offer? Crab cakes, jalapeno poppers and even pumpkin pie.

Overview

Imagine all the spice and flavour of authentic American barbecue married with premium-quality New Zealand meat. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, thanks to Prohibition Smokehouse it's a reality, one you can really sink your teeth into. Slinging satisfying family-style feasts — sticky fingers and sauce moustaches are inevitable — the Smokehouse has firmly asserted itself as a Dunedin hotspot.

All meats are smoked in-house, low and slow, which means smoky, juicy and delicious meat. Crabcakes, brisket, jalapeno poppers and pumpkin pie all feature on the menu and boy howdy are they good. The wine list is not too shabby, either, featuring local drops from Marlborough, Otago and Wairau Valley.

With a contemporary fit-out — metal beams, parquetry floors, exposed brick and lots of dark wood — you'll feel as though you're in a cosmopolitan hub, not downtown Dunedin. Prohibition Smokehouse is open from Tuesday through to Saturday, 5.30–10pm, and is the perfect place for dinner after a day of exploring the South Island.
