The Food Room - CLOSED

Overview

I've come here to talk about many a Ponsonby local's favourite, The Food Room. You can't really get too far into it though, without first getting into a well warranted rant about what I consider to be the best pies in town and I'll swear allegiance to The Food Room til the bitter end. You wouldn't call this humble abode a restaurant as such, more of and easy-come-easy-go cafe.

There's no false advertising when you stumble across the sign on the footpath, 'Best Pies in town'. The word has spread far and wide; it's pretty much Ponsonby gospel. Your experience at The Food Room all starts with the sweet, sweet aroma of freshly baked pastry - I challenge you get get past the pie cabinet which is tactfully positioned right at the front door.

The toughest decision is what pie to pick, as there's something here for everyone. You've got your standard steak and cheese, bacon and egg, vegetarian and even gluten free. My personal favourite is the chicken, mushroom and pesto pie. The ingredients are healthy, it's the perfect temperature and the fact you know this puppy is fresh out of the oven sure ticks all the boxes to claim 'Best Pie in Town'. Despite the busy stream of people (which suggests a good turnover of delicious pies) you'll always be able to find a prime seat in the sun and a paper at arm's reach; convenience at its best.

Although the Ponsonby Food Room is now famous for its pies, it doesn't stop there. You will also find a fresh array of delicious gourmet sandwiches, hot filled focaccia breads, wraps and club sammies. They've also go great coffee too. So don't be fooled by its humble appearance, this is definitely a place worth visiting when you're toddling down P Road.
