Overview

Once going by Zus & Zo, this popular little spot on Jervois Road has now morphed into a new kid in town, namely The Governor. Labelled after former Governor-General of New Zealand, William Jervois, this little bistro is the perfect addition to the neighbourhood; serving breakfast all day and with ample choices for lunch, they are here to cater to all your fresh food needs. A funky monochrome fit out with wooden interior makes for a modern and fresh dining experience, and with waiters adorned in Parisian-styled stripes and more table space than meets the eye hiding out back, The Governor is a laid-back, neighbourhood cafe-bistro, perfectly situated on the cusp of Herne Bay and Ponsonby.

The menu is organic and seasonal, which is absolutely my favourite thing for any place offering food, as it means you have a legitimate excuse to come back again and see what else is on offer. With a few interesting dishes to currently pique one's interest, some ranging from light to the more indulgent variety, it was no easy feat settling on just one thing to order. I opted for the smoked Hauraki fish brandade, with harissa, poached egg and octopus tentacle to mix things up a bit ($19), while a friend opted for the breakfast salad, chock-full with greens, fresh grated carrots, beets and seeds, and was topped off with a delicious tahini turmeric yogurt dressing and two perfectly poached eggs ($18). Next time I will be back for actual breakfast rather than a breakaway lunch from the office. I will definitely be giving one of the sweet offerings a go; The Gov's granola, complete with summer fruit compote, almond and cacao yogurt and finished with a drizzle of raw honey, sounds like a bloody brilliant way to start off a day.

With a diverse menu filled to the brim with organic delights, as well as few crowd favourites, it's safe to say that The Governor should have something for everyone. For those with less daring taste buds, the cabinet is also filled with delicious rolls, salads and sweet treats. Most definitely to try fit in the latter after your main meal, regardless of how full you feel.
