Overview

Venturing out West one fine Saturday lunchtime saw us experiencing a local gem on the Te Atatu Peninsula. The Luscious Food Store lies behind a rather unassuming shop front but once inside opens up into a spacious and airy eating area fitted out with the ever-trendy black table and hanging greenery combo. Heading straight outdoors to make the most of the sunshine, we found our spot in the corner of the sunny courtyard smack bang next to the largest chalk board wall you will have ever seen. Chalkboards, Ray Bans and even more potted greenery, my friend and I were in our element.

Having romanced a few too many beersies the night before, I studied the brunch menu with great enthusiasm. The selection was not vast but it was good. Quality over quantity right?  I signed myself right up to the sourdough crumbed fish of the day hotcakes with poached eggs, spinach, tomato and chilli salsa ($17.50). My partner in crime made the good life decision (this time) and ordered a pulled pork tacos with black bean mole ($23).

Barely 15 minutes later and two wonderful dishes arrived. Luckily we were tucked behind a corner as I immediately sprung up to take a photo for the Instagram the moment the waitress turned her back. Having just spent three weeks in South East Asia where a poached egg means boiled; these were the most glorious poached eggs of my life. Perfectly done, not a single trace of cooked yolk anywhere. I am not surprised that the fish cakes are a popular choice amongst the regular patrons. They were delicious. The build-your-own tacos were not only a delight to look at but also met our high pulled pork standards. Portions were sensible, although I maybe wish I had just a little bit more - this may just be out of greed and the love of a good poached egg.

What I really liked about this place was the two totally different dining experiences you could have. Outside was relaxed, kids were playing cricket in the corner, the walls were covered in pastel coloured dinosaurs and it felt very much a summer-in-your-own-backyard vibe. Back inside, you could easily hold a sophisticated work brunch or have a romantic table for two.  I imagine this location is as equally delightful on a gloomier day as it was today.

Good food and good vibes, I would definitely suggest this spot for a good impromptu friend date, business lunch or just a bit of me-time.
