Overview
What I remembered to be the back area of Brooklyn Bar (albeit three years ago) has now transformed into a very cool little cafe. Located directly across the road from Auckland City Library and Academy Cinemas, and only opened a few months ago by a couple of brave fashion students, This That is a space where creativity seems to thrive.
Once a dingy haunt where wine loving uni lecturers would hangout and talk about Marxism, the room is now filled with wall climbing plants and artwork from some of the city's best up-and-comers. It is close to both AUT and Auckland Uni so there is a steady stream of students who take advantage of the cozy surrounds. The music is downbeat and conducive to studying, reading, and just getting shit done in general.
This That has a focus on tea from far and wide (in particular boutique tea retailer T2), but at 10.30am on a Wednesday I couldn't bring myself to order anything apart from a flat white. The coffee is good, and the lady who made it is good for a chat. I don't usually head to cafes on my own but if I did I would be quite happy if they were all quite similar to this one.
The food options are fairly basic, there are toasted sandwiches, cabinet food, and a small lunch menu that includes cottage pie and pasta. I grabbed a Brekkie Bap for $7.50 and it does the trick. I hear whispers that a full menu is in the works.
This That is worth is checking out if just for the vibes, service, and ever changing artwork, and a more adventurous food menu should soon add another string to its bow.
