Overview

Having just celebrated its first anniversary, Herne Bay café Zus & Zo has done well in its wee one year life for establishing itself as one of the top cafes in the area.  With a fit out that is a nod to the atypical Dutch sandwich shop, Zus & Zo is the definition of comfy meeting contemporary. Think crisp white walls, painted wooded floors, huge floor to ceiling window front, flower boxes and an old school bicycle parked out front next to the sidewalk bench.

The staff are friendly and personable and will happily direct you to their favourites on the menu if you’re a little overwhelmed by the wide array of delicious options.  A repeat offender for ordering the Blue Cheese Mushrooms with a poached egg, I’d label it one of the best brunch pics in Auckland. Or if you’re after something a little less rich, the bread basket with preserves leaves you feeling surprisingly full and flavour fed.

If you find yourself at Zus and Zo at lunch time, don’t underestimate the way these guys put together a sandwich – it’s what they’re getting the biggest wrap on the street for. The Meatball being a favourite of mine followed closely by the Fresh Sandwich which combines roast pumpkin, grilled courgette, pine nuts and date chutney - an ideal vegetarian option.  For the more carb-conscious, the Chicken Salad is a definite win or if you’re more of a sort-of-carb-conscious-but-don’t-mind-a-bit-of-cheese-thanks, then the Beetroot with grilled Haulomi Salad is a real treat.

With an evident fan club of regulars, Zus and Zo oozes that fresh and friendly vibe you want from your local café, with a great team of staff, delicious coffee and inventive, tasty food to match.
