More than 700 new hotel rooms are set to open in the central city this year — just a small slice of the 4000 rooms expected to line up with the (pre-COVID-19) projected four million visitors set to visit our shores by 2025.

Following announcements from design-led property QT Auckland and boutique accomodation provider The Hotel Britomart, New Zealand's first Park Hyatt hotel has now revealed its opening date for 2020. Currently available for reservation from 15 September, the property will be the first major hotel opening in Auckland this year.

The 195-room, five-star hotel arrives from Beijing-based investors Fu Wah and has been called a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in New Zealand. Designers from Singapore firm ar+d, together with Bossley Architects and local iwi Ngāti Whātua, designed the seven-storey hotel to reflect a Māori wharenui (house). The exterior centres on the notion of a Māori cloak wrapping around the building, while the entrance and guest rooms feature traditional artworks and carvings, and custom-designed tukutuku panels and rugs.

The majority of guest rooms overlook the Lighter Quay or Waitematā Harbour, while the $10,000 per night Presidential Suite comes with its own internal garden and a rooftop terrace. Elsewhere, the five-star property features a ceremonial garden, a day spa, a 25-metre infinity pool, and a full fitness centre.

With four dining options, guests will never need to leave the property. Executive chef Brent Martin brings over 20 years of hospitality experience to the hotel's signature restaurant, Onemata, as well as a relaxed grab-and-go cafe, an all-day dining venue, and a bar specialising in fortified spirits.

Park Hyatt is scheduled to open at 99 Halsey Street, Auckland CBD on 15 September, 2020. Bookings ahead of 31 October, 2020 to stay before 31 December, 2020 will receive NZD$50 credit per night to spend onsite.
