A first-time venture for husband-and-wife team Tassos Dermetzoglou and Olivia Ientile, The Thornbury Fromagerie opened right before the global pandemic hit Australia in early 2020. Originally launched as a dine-in cheese and wine bar, it quickly expanded to include an online store, becoming a firm neighbourhood favourite for locals seeking a much-needed lockdown cheese fix.

The expansive cheese menu, curated in collaboration with Matt Steele of Cornelius Cheese, is conveniently split into goat, white mould, washed rind, semi-hard and hard, and blue. Among it, you'll find goodies from near and far; perhaps a lemon myrtle-spiked goat milk chèvre from the Adelaide Hills, a decadently creamy washed-rind number from Rians in France, or a Sardinian cheese laced with black truffle. On the wine side of things, French-born sommelier Christian Maier has pulled together a list of drops from across Australia, Italy and France, from the likes of a Macedon Ranges pet-nat, to a classic French burgundy or beaujolais. Also on the drinks lineup: a selection of StrangeLove sodas, cider and locally-made brews.

It's a cosy, friendly spot to park yourself for a glass of vino and a cheese board or to unwind in the courtyard getting acquainted with one of the famed cheese toasties. When things are kicking on as normal, games nights and trivia nights are also a weekly occurrence. And during lockdown, you can still get your hands on some primo cheese and wine, with click-and-collect available on orders from the online store.
