WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER CANBERRA FOR THAT FIRST TRIP AWAY TOGETHER

in partnership with

Woo your new favourite person with an itinerary of romantic activities.

So, you've met someone who you think is a little bit special. It's all going swimmingly, so someone — you, them or maybe your mates who are tired of seeing the pair of you making googly eyes at each other — suggests planning a mini holiday. Planning a first trip as a couple is fraught with obstacles as you want to nail that perfect balance of romance (for more googly eyes) and fun.

Canberra definitely fills this brief for a romantic getaway — and it's certainly much closer (and more affordable) than Paris. You and your new favourite person can enjoy stunning views from both the ground and the sky, plus luxe dinners and unique experiences that you may be able to tell the grandkids about one day. Here are five experiences you can have in and around the city that'll help you woo your new boo.

Regional holidays to the ACT are now permitted for some states — check the rules for your own state or territory here. Also, some of the places mentioned below may still be closed or operating differently due to COVID-19 restrictions. Please check websites before making any plans.

A hot air balloon is one of the more luxe (and fun) ways to see all of Canberra, including the stunning landscape of the mountains, national park and buildings. Balloon Aloft’s three-hour tours kick off about half an hour before sunrise (suck it up — you can sleep in tomorrow). After a quick briefing, you’ll be launched into the air to watch the sun fill the valley and lakes with soft morning light. Your pilot will be able to point out the sights while sharing top tips about Canberra.

For an extra special treat, you can opt for your ride to end with a traditional champagne breakfast at the Hyatt Hotel. Want to go all out? You can book a private balloon ride just for you two and take in all the sights in peaceful tranquillity.

Another good way to get your head around Canberra is to rent a couple of bikes and cycle around Lake Burley Griffin. With 40 kilometres of shoreline to explore, there is plenty to see — and lots of opportunities for cruising conversations with your new partner. If you’ve arrived straight from the big smoke, it’s also a great way to connect with nature and shake off a busy week at work (and get a bit of exercise in).

The ride around the lake will offer lots of stops, including the NGA — which is currently showing a bunch of Monet works (until September 1) — as well as the National Museum of Australia and Canberra Glassworks, plus, coffee shops and afternoon pop-up wine bars. Time your ride to arrive at local favourite Snapper on the Lake for lunch. This peaceful waterside spot serves some great fish and chips and has the added bonus of being fully licensed. After lunch, make a visit to the nearby Beijing Garden, where you’ll see examples of traditional Chinese stone, rock gardens and beautiful landscaping.

Canberra is buzzing with cool spots to grab dinner and drinks. One that stands out is Temporada, a buzzing inner-city eatery known for its bold share-style menu. The cosy fit-out is perfect for romantic evenings. Start with a cocktail — perhaps a rum espresso martini or elderflower southside — before diving into the extensive wine list, which features a good mixture of European and local labels.

The menu is seasonal and inspired by classic tapas-style dishes. You may find fresh burrata, rock oysters, and salt cod croquettes, plus a selection of protein fresh off the woodfired grill — think Fremantle octopus, king trout, beef fillet and wagyu intercostals. For a mix of everything, try the chef’s menu. For $80 per person, you’ll get to try 13 plates, starting with housemade sourdough and Sydney rock oysters, followed by slow-cooked lamb shoulder with wood-grilled asparagus.

When you want to take a break from staring at each other, cast your gaze upwards to watch the night sky come alive with twinkling stars. Out in Canberra, the stargazing is out-of-this-world good. The clear night sky offers the chance to see the rings of Saturn, the Milky Way, the craters of the moon and more — with the right gadgets, that is. At Mount Stromlo Observatory, you can impress your date under the open roof to the panoramic night sky, revealing views of the brightest stars in the Southern Hemisphere. Astronomers will take you through a two-hour tour of the universe with the help of a few telescopes. And the best part? It’s completely free (although a gold coin donation is encouraged).
