Tired of the classic movie and dinner date night combo? Us too. That's why we're always on the hunt for new things to do, scouring the city for not-boring Brisbane activities — ones that are guaranteed to take your next date way beyond done-before beers at the pub. Whether you're taking someone on a second date or doing your 100th with your significant other, we've got some killer (and, yes, cute) ideas for dates to go on this week, no matter how much money you've got to spend. Just think of us as your cultural wingman. You're welcome. Free Bend, Stretch, Sweat and Splash Through a Free Outdoor Workout We all know that solid dose of 'the good feels' you get after you've done something nice for yourself/your body (like exercise). And until Saturday, December 7, you and your plus one can expect those feelings to increase two-fold. Thanks to the return of Brisbane's Feel Good Program for spring, the city is home a series of outdoor fitness classes — and, unlike that fancy new yoga studio in your neighbourhood that smells like acai berries and only serves charcoal tea, these classes are all entirely free. Ranging from sessions to get your blood pumping (Zumba, body combat) to classes to get your zen flowing freely (yoga, pilates), the Feel Good Program is an initiative designed to suit any and all fitness levels. Also, most classes will bathe you in neon. Sessions are held around South Bank Parklands, at either Flowstate (for most classes) or the Boat Pool (for aqua classes). BYO water bottle, towel and, where required, a yoga mat. Classes happen every day except Fridays and Sundays, and they all run for 45 minutes. Times vary depending on the day, but your options include getting started early on a weekday with a 6am mat pilates session or on a weekday with a 7.30am yoga session, hitting the pool on a Saturday, or finishing up your working day with dancing at 5.30pm or a body balance class at 6.30pm. Whichever you choose, it'll have you embracing the warm outdoors and feeling good — check out the timetable online. Under $50 Hit Up a Gluten-Free Market Ah, gluten. Scourge of coeliacs, this humble wheat protein has been making life difficult for as long as we've been eating sliced bread. But fortunately for all the folks out there with gluten intolerances, VEND Marketplace in Virginia will be a gluten-free zone for a day. At the Gluten-Free Pop-Up Market from 10am–3pm on Saturday, October 19, mobile food vendors are setting up their stalls and rolling in their trucks to sling tasty treats without a single bit of wheat, rye or barley in sight. At earlier events, SoCal Tacos, The Dagwood Dog Guy, King of the Wings and Big J Woodfired Pizza were among the eateries making an appearance, alongside OMG Donuts, Roll It Ice Cream, Golden Churros and Mama Mac's Macarons — and others. There'll also be a number of stalls selling a variety of gluten-free products to take home, so you and your favourite person can stock your pantries as well. The dog-friendly event will let you take advantage of VEND's usual 130-plus small businesses, too, for a stint of shopping with your gluten-free eats. The October timing? Yes, that's perfect for getting your Christmas shopping done early. Under $100 Get Giggling on Caxton Street Sport. Seafood. If you and your significant other think about Petrie Terrace's Caxton Street, then one of the two, if not both, always comes to mind. The inner-city Brisbane roadway is the home of Lang Park. It's also long been synonymous with festivals celebrating the ocean's finest. On Saturday, October 19,, it's adding another type of fest to its roster of events, with Good Chat Comedy Club launching the inaugural Caxton Street Comedy Festival for a jam-packed day overflowing with laughs. Already a place go get giggling inside Caxton Street Brewing Company — which was previously Fritzenberger, and also Casablanca before that — Good Chat is sharing its sense of humour with its base venue, plus Lefty's Music Hall, Alfie's at The Lord Alfred and The Haunt upstairs at The Caxton Hotel. Each spot is hosting a feast of shows, with more than 20 on the lineup across the full day. Boasting a program featuring talents both local and from further afield, the fest will get patrons splitting their sides thanks to Lloyd Langford, Michael Hing, Geraldine Hickey, Chris Ryan, Luke Heggie, Nick Cody, Damien Power, Amy Hetherington, Emma Zammit and more. The Death by Birding podcast is recording live, as is Who Knew It with Matt Stewart — so whether you like watching avian life or comedians answering quizzes, it's on the bill. Caxton Street Comedy Festival is taking its hilarity outdoors as well via streetside entertainment, and sling tins of its own Tight Five beer, which Caxton Street Brewing Company is making just for the occasion. Big Blowouts [caption id="attachment_760930" align="alignnone" width="1920"] Claudia Ciapocha[/caption] Dance Next to a Giant Piece of Tropical Fruit Childhood snaps aplenty are filled with Australia's big things, including pictures with The Big Pineapple as a backdrop if you've ever visited the Sunshine Coast. As an adult, there's another way for you and your date to make memories at the famous Woombye site: hitting up The Big Pineapple Festival, which is finally returning in 2024 after a three-year absence with a jam-packed lineup. The Amity Affliction, Bliss n Eso and Peking Duk lead the bill, taking to the stage while you dance in the shadow of a giant piece of tropical fruit, alongside Tones and I, Golden Features, Vera Blue, Thornhill and Dune Rats doing a DJ set. There's a heap more acts where they came from, too, on what's set to be a massive spring day in the Sunshine State. 2024's event is also adding a World Eats and Beats precinct, which is where you can grab a bite and listen to global tunes; the Lantern Parade lighting up the site, aka pineapple fields; the Skate Jam, where top Aussie skaters will on their decks; and Burlesque L'amour doing a festival stint. Or, you can enter the Best Dressed at the Fest contest, with prizes for both solo and team attire — and likely a range of pineapple-inspired outfits getting a workout — or try your stuff at The Great Australian Pineapple Toss competition. As well as live music, the fest includes two days of camping. Accordingly, if you hadn't already, start looking forward to an event that'll take over its iconic location's natural amphitheatres, get folks pitching a tent at the 4000-person campground, and also span workshops and art installations in a relaxed setting, too. Raise a Stein (or Several) at a Massive Oktoberfest Celebration Every September and October, Germany erupts with brews, food and lederhosen-wearing revellers for its annual Oktoberfest celebrations. When that time rolls around Down Under, Australia follows suit. One such festivity is Oktoberfest in the Gardens, which has been throwing big Bavarian-themed celebrations around the country for 14 years — and is returning to Brisbane for 2024. Oktoberfest in the Gardens will make its latest River City stop at Brisbane Showgrounds on Saturday, October 19. If you and your special someone are keen to head along, expect company; the event expects to welcome in over 65 people enjoying steins, schnitties and German shindigs across this year's seven-city run. Brisbane's fest is serving up the same kind of beer- and bratwurst-fuelled shenanigans that Germany has become so famous for. So, if you have a hankering for doppelbock and dancing to polka, it's the next best thing to heading to Europe. Oktoberfest in the Gardens boasts a crucial attraction, too: as well as serving a variety of pilsners, ciders, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, it constructs huge beer halls to house the boozy merriment. When you're not raising a stein — or several — at the day-long event, you can tuck into pretzels and other traditional snacks at food stalls, or check out the hefty array of entertainment. Live music, roving performers, a silent disco, rides and a sideshow alley are all on the agenda.
