Ask five people which of the Greek Islands is the best and you'll probably get five different responses. But a strong case can be made for Milos.

Not only is it home to some of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous beaches you’ll ever get to swim at, but it’s also a history buff’s mecca. One day, you could be traipsing over luna-like rock formations, venturing into weather-worn caves and snorkelling in crystal clear shallows. The next, you’re wandering through villages lined with traditional whitewashed buildings and exploring ancient ruins. Throw in sunsets that can’t be rivalled and bounties of freshly caught seafood and you’ve got yourself the perfect island escape.

In partnership with HSBC, we’ve put together this helpful starter guide to Milos so you can start planning your itinerary.

And, if you have the time, why limit yourself to just one island? From here, you’re perfectly placed to hop around the Cyclades. Popular spots Paros, Ios and Santorini are all less than two hours away by ferry. Alternatively, you could opt for one of the lesser-known destinations — check out the ‘Further Afield’ section below for inspo.

PLANNING AHEAD

Before you launch into weeks of fun in Europe, you’ll need to get some adult stuff out of the way first. Organise a pet sitter, hand your unfinished work over to your poor colleagues and, most importantly, sort out your payment plan. With an HSBC Everyday Global Account, you can have up to ten currencies (including EUR) preloaded so you can use your Visa Debit Card for all purchases and ATM withdrawals. The best part? You won’t be stung with international transaction fees.

GETTING AROUND

Though buses are the cheapest mode of transportation on the island, they’re somewhat unreliable. Plus, if you’re keen to check out some of Milos’ more remote parts, you’ll need an alternative. So, to ensure you’re getting the most out of your time here, consider hiring a car or ATV instead. We suggest booking online in advance to nab the best price, particularly if you’re visiting in peak season. Niko’s Rent-a-Car is a good place to start.

LOCALS LOVE

On the northwest side of the island, you’ll find a series of three beaches known as Triades Beach. The area is pretty secluded — you’ll need to traverse a dirt track to get there and there are no shops, cafes or other facilities around, meaning you will need to take all supplies with you. The upside? These sandy coves are more secluded than the other beaches on the island.

DON’T MISS

You’ve no doubt seen photos of Kleftiko, the collection of white cliffs and rock formations jutting out of impossibly turquoise water. Once a hiding place for pirates, the caves of Kleftiko are now a popular tourist attraction — and one that is only possible to reach via boat. There are countless tours that’ll take you there, including this half-day one which you can book now for just AUD$71 pp.
