Bartender Bar Tour with Jason Deane from St John’s
Jason Deane tells us where it is at.
Hospo industry veteran and Hawkes Bay-born Jason Deane is the personification St John's, the laid-back waterfront bar. Having been a bartender in the hospitality game for quite a number of years, we decided to hear some of his long-acquired wisdom on the Wellington bar scene.
Concrete Playground: What's your favourite drink?
Jason Deane: I love fresh tap beer (old school, but can't be beaten). Also partial to a properly-made Bloody Mary.
CP: What is your opinion on Wellington's nightlife?
JD: I love it. It's high end - I love our pride in quality, diversity; and we have some great food options.
CP: Tell us an interesting story about yourself.
JD: I take great pride in being the first person ever to be evicted from the Cake Tin for pitch invasion. It was the opening day of the Cake Tin during the Rugby Sevens.
CP: So it's finally the weekend. Which five bars would you recommend going to in Wellington?
JD: I am a big fan of El Horno, Mish Mosh, the Cambridge, Tasting Room and Old Bailey.
1. El Horno
I love El Horno - they have wicked music, sangria and great staff.
Insider Tip: Just ask for the sangria.
2. Mish Mosh
Earlier on in the evenings, Mish Mosh is a great spot to watch the world go by.
Insider tip: They have some of the best burgers in town.
3. Cambridge Hotel
Cambridge Hotel is a classic Kiwi pub filled (of course) with classic Kiwi people. It's my home sweet home, and a choice TAB for a punt.
Insider tip: Happy hour is always a plus, don't miss the free BBQ on a Wednesday. Ask for Lucy on the TAB, she's world class.
4. Tasting Room
Tasting Room is a great little all-round bar. Catch me there, hanging out in the arvo sun come summer.
Insider Tip: They have consistently good food. I highly recommend the platter.
5. The Old Bailey
Away from the Courtenay end of town, head over to The Old Bailey for some excellent comfort food and cold beer.
Insider Tip: The Old Bailey is also a great brunch spot, so would probably look at doing the next day's recovery there too. It's also great spot to visit before and after the Cake Tin (providing you're allowed in the Cake Tin), and watching sport.
