Dreams Really Do Come True: Diet Coke Is Returning to McDonald's Australia After Almost Four Years
All hail the return of the post-mix fridge cig: Diet Coke returns Macca's restaurants nationwide at long last.
If you've spent the past few years ordering a Coke No Sugar at the drive-thru when what you really wanted was a Diet Coke — or a 'fridge cigarette', as the internet calls it — this one's for you. McDonald's has confirmed that Diet Coke is returning to its Australian menus, almost four years after the fast-food chain pulled the drink from restaurants nationwide in January 2023.
The removal left Diet Coke fans with Coke No Sugar as their main sugar-free option at Macca's — and plenty of them took to social media and Change.org petitions to make it clear that the two drinks are not interchangeable. While both are sugar- and calorie-free, Coke No Sugar is designed to taste closer to classic Coca-Cola, whereas Diet Coke, which launched in 1983, has its own lighter flavour blend that a loyal crowd has stuck with for decades.
"We've heard the calls for Diet Coke to return, and we're excited to confirm it's coming back to Macca's," says a McDonald's Australia spokesperson. "Diet Coke is now rolling out to restaurants across Australia and will continue to land on menus over the coming months."
That means it might not be at your local straight away, with the drink arriving at stores in stages rather than all at once. Once it does land, Diet Coke is set to be available across McDonald's meal deals, so you can pair it with your usual order of a Big Mac and fries.
Diet Coke is rolling out to McDonald's restaurants across Australia now, with more stores to follow over the coming months. Check the Macca's app or visit the website to see what's on the menu at your nearest restaurant.
