September's new-release films give you plenty of choice when it comes to planning a movie night at home. Disney's Moana — Family, Adventure

Disney's Moana is getting the live-action treatment, bringing the epic story to life like never before. Moana sets off across the sea alongside Maui to restore prosperity to her people, with the characters now played by a live-action cast against a real-world backdrop.

The new version reimagines the beloved story of Moana and Maui heading back out onto the ocean with plenty of music and mythology along for the ride. It's a sizeable family adventure with enough going on to keep a few different age groups entertained, which is handy when the entire household is suddenly home for the afternoon.

Minions & Monsters — Family, Comedy

This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.

Globally recognised and beloved by fans of all ages, the Despicable Me and Minions franchise has exceeded $5.6 billion at the global box office. And the appetite for those mischievous yellow troublemakers shows no sign of slowing down. In Australia, Minions & Monsters is currently sitting at #2 on the Best-Selling Movies chart and #3 on the Most Rented Movies chart, proving families still can't get enough of the mayhem. Super Troopers 3 — Comedy

Sometimes you want a thoughtful drama that gives you something to ponder. Other times you want the cinematic equivalent of throwing a handful of mates onto the couch and seeing what happens. Super Troopers 3 is very much for the latter.

It's the third instalment in the beloved Super Troopers franchise that sees Jay Chandrasekhar back in the director's chair, alongside the Broken Lizard comedy team, who once again write and star in the film. So if you've been waiting for the boys to get back together and do the whole thing again, here they are. Gather a few mates, get the snacks sorted and let them take it from there.

Jackass: Best and Last — Comedy, Stunts

The original Jackass crew have reunited, which feels either like excellent news or a warning sign depending on your tolerance for reckless behaviour. Jackass: Best and Last brings Johnny Knoxville and the gang back for another round of stunts, pranks and the sort of physical comedy that makes you wonder how many times someone has to say "don't try this at home".

Australians are clearly still very much into it, with Jackass: Best and Last currently sitting at #3 on the Best-Selling Movies chart and #6 on the Most Rented Movies chart. Gather some mates, put the snacks within easy reach and let the chaos commence.

Colours of Time — Drama

Not every movie night needs explosions, monsters or people falling off things. Colours of Time takes a considerably more reflective route, following four cousins who come together after unexpectedly inheriting an abandoned house in rural Normandy.

As they start digging into their family history, the story moves between 1895 and 2024. In the earlier timeline, their ancestor Adèle leaves her hometown at 21 to search for her mother in Paris, arriving in a city on the cusp of modernity, photography and the birth of Impressionist painting. The two timelines eventually collide, bringing the cousins' contemporary lives into conversation with the family history they've uncovered.

One Night Only — Romance, Comedy

Movie nights aren't always family affairs or chaotic gatherings of friends. Sometimes it's you, another person and the eternal question of what the hell you're going to watch.

One Night Only follows two love-starved strangers who crash into each other on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex. It's a fairly bold premise for a romantic comedy, and certainly a little different from the usual meet-cute, misunderstandings, grand gesture formula. It's a good pick for a night in when you want something romantic but are after a premise that's a little less predictable than the usual rom-com formula.

Dead Man's Wire — Thriller, Crime

On February 8, 1977, Tony Kiritsis enters the office of Meridian Mortgage Company president Richard Hall and takes him hostage. Tony wires a sawed-off shotgun to Hall's neck with a 'dead man's wire' tied to the trigger — if Richard runs or the police intervene… boom! So, yes, Dead Man's Wire starts with a fairly serious hostage situation and only gets more tense from there.

The film comes from legendary director Gus Van Sant and stars Bill Skarsgård, Dacre Montgomery, Colman Domingo, Cary Elwes, Myha'la and Al Pacino. It's based on a real-life incident, which makes the already wild premise considerably more unsettling.

If you're planning a movie night where everyone actually wants to know what happens next, this should keep the conversation to a minimum.

Mutiny — Action, Thriller

If you prefer your thrillers with a little more running around, Mutiny follows Cole Reed after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered right in front of him. Naturally, Cole is then set up to take the fall for the crime, forcing him to go on the run while trying to uncover an international conspiracy.

There's betrayal, murder, a man being hunted for something he didn't do and the small matter of an international conspiracy to untangle. In other words, probably not the one to put on if you're planning to fall asleep halfway through.

The End of Oak Street — Sci-Fi, Drama

Suburban life is generally pretty predictable. You know where the shops are, you know which neighbour has the loudest lawnmower and you've got a fairly good idea what you'll be doing tomorrow. Unless, of course, a cosmic event suddenly transports your entire neighbourhood somewhere unknown.

That's what happens to the Platt family in The End of Oak Street, as they band together to navigate their very new surroundings. It's a family story with a sizeable sci-fi twist, making it a good option when you want something familiar enough to settle into but strange enough to keep things interesting. It's also a handy choice when the household wants something everyone can watch without defaulting to another familiar rewatch.

Ice Cream Man — Horror

There are few things more innocent than an ice cream van pulling up on a summer day. Unless the person behind the counter has started serving children sweet treats with horrifying results, in which case perhaps you'd be better off sticking to the freezer at home.

Ice Cream Man takes an idyllic summer town and sends it spiralling into madness, turning a familiar childhood pleasure into something considerably more sinister. It's the sort of horror premise that might make you look twice the next time you hear the ice cream truck coming down the street. Maybe don't make this the one you put on before bed if you're particularly attached to the idea of ice cream vans remaining wholesome.

Evil Dead Burn — Horror

And then there's Evil Dead Burn, for when regular movie-night scares simply aren't enough. After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws, only for them to begin transforming into deadites one by one. She soon discovers that the vows she took in life may have followed her into death.

The Evil Dead franchise has never been particularly interested in letting anyone have a nice, quiet time, and this one is no different. It's currently #5 on the Best-Selling Movies chart and #9 on the Most Rented Movies chart, so plenty of Australians are choosing to spend their evenings watching things go very, very wrong.

Save it for a late-night movie session when a few good scares are firmly on the agenda.
