With this hugely successful production currently lighting up stages in Sydney before it opens in Brisbane this November, it won't be long before Melbourne theatre-lovers can experience the acclaimed production again — the first time in more than a decade.
The highest-grossing stage production of all time — The Lion King has trod the boards around the globe over 11,000 times and raked in more than $11 billion in revenue. Melburnians can join the musical's 127 million viewers to date, with the show returning to the Regent Theatre stage from Thursday, March 25, 2027.
While this production hardly needs an introduction, it's worth getting the full picture of just how successful it's become. Debuting in 1998, The Lion King collected six Tony Awards straight away, while making OG director Julie Taymor the first woman to receive a Tony for Direction of a Musical.
Three decades in, the cast remains as talented as ever, with Buyi Zama leading the show for the third time on our shores as Rafiki, including its original 2003 run. Meanwhile, Zama is joined by Nick Afoa as Mufasa, who debuted as Simba in the Australian production in 2013.
Plus, The Lion King features the celebrated work of Tony Award–winning choreographer Garth Fagan alongside the modern classic Broadway soundtrack created by none other than Elton John and Tim Rice, a frequent collaborator of stage legend Andrew Lloyd Webber.
