Overview

With origins traced back to 1774, Birkenstock's commitment to comfort has stood the test of time. Now, the much-loved brand's newest Melbourne storefront is leaning into a more local kind of industrial heritage, opening a flagship location in Carlton's Malt Store. Built in 1904 as part of the Carlton & United Breweries complex, the building was abandoned in the 1980s, sitting dormant for 25 years before being reimagined as a modern retail and office space.

As the Malt Store's latest tenant, Birkenstock has carefully balanced these narratives. Now serving as the brand's home in Melbourne, the new space is anchored by a dedicated repair workshop, where you can get your cracked, rusted and worn-down footwear brought back to life instead of being sent to landfill. Then, an elevated retail experience ensures there's no better way to explore the brand's long-standing silhouettes.

In terms of design, Birkenstock at the Malt Store is shaped by the same values that have carried the brand for over 250 years. That means recycled and repurposed materials, such as circular chandeliers made from recycled aluminium, and walls and display shelves made from recycled timber rich in natural grain. Plus, the entrance features a cobbled bluestone threshold — echoing Melbourne's historic laneways — and a custom maintenance hole cover cast with the Birkenstock seal.

Inside, timber display frames offer visitors a look at the raw materials that underpin Birkenstock, from cork granules to leather and buckles. Then, at one end of the store, a matte-black fireplace flanked by cosy lounge chairs invites guests to get comfortable as they consider which sandals pair harmoniously with their feet. At the same time, visitors browsing can peer into the next space through large steel-framed windows — the dedicated repair workshop.

While this convenient service has moved from Birkenstock's Clifton Hill storefront to its new flagship, it actually started in a small Mount Waverley garage several years ago. With the Carlton Malt Store now featuring the world's largest official Birkenstock repair shop, in-house technicians provide a range of maintenance and restoration services, including heel replacements, buckle repairs, and sole retreads. Over 5,000 repairs are completed in-store each year, with materials repurposed whenever possible.

So, whether you need a new pair of Birks for an upcoming Euro adventure or your sandals could use some expert-led TLC before warmer weather returns, this tactile in-store experience puts Birkenstock's best foot forward. And with a couple centuries' worth of German craftsmanship to reflect on, this historic corner of Melbourne might be the perfect place to feel immersed in Birkenstock's storied traditions.

Birkenstock at The Malt Store is now open at 551 Swanston St, Carlton. Head to the website for more information.
