Overview

If you're a movie lover in Melbourne, then you always know when the warm weather arrives — and you look forward to it. As soon as the conditions allow, the city's outdoor cinema season begins, filling spring and summer with flicks under the stars.

That's what's on the agenda in Elsternwick right now, with the Classic Rooftop Cinema restarting its projector for another go-around. This year, expect an ace array of new and classic highlights — and festival flicks, too — whether you can't wait to see Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, adore Ferris Bueller's Day Off or are keen to hit up the Jewish International Film Festival.

Also on the Classic's openair lineup for 2023–24: Emerald Fennell's Saltburn, her first stint behind the lens since Promising Young Woman; lesbian fight club comedy Bottoms; the wonderfully titled Dicks: The Musical; Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron; and Emma Stone (The Curse) riffing on Frankenstein in Poor Things.

Christmas movies will get you in the festive mood, and The Goonies is also on the retro list.

Sessions run depending on the weather, so take that into consideration. Fancy a drink? The bar opens an hour before each night's film.
