Overview

Right now in Melbourne, it's all about David Bowie. ACMI's critically-acclaimed winter exhibition has seen record-breaking ticket sales, while a series of late night parties and performances have kept the love going after dark. Sticking to the theme, the centre's latest film program features the best of Bowie's screen career, with a month's worth of iconic titles that reflect his enormous cultural cache.

Beginning Thursday, August 20, the David Bowie on Film program is split into three separate streams. The first focuses on memorable Bowie acting performances, from his big screen debut in Nicholas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth to his bizarre cameo in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

The second section looks at Bowie's cinematic heroes — the films and artists who influenced his work. Movies in this section include Andy Warhol's The Velvet Underground and Nico: A Symphony of Sounds, and Josef von Sternberg's The Blue Angel starring the iconic Marlene Dietrich.

The final section features films that have utilised or been inspired by Bowie's music. These range from Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou to Lars von Trier's Dogville to Jim Jarmusch's recent vampire flick Only Lovers Left Alive.
