Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2016
The largest celebration of Indian cinema in the entire Southern Hemisphere.
Overview
From indie sensations to Bollywood hits to documentaries that hold a mirror to one of the largest nations on Earth, the program at the 2016 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has something for every taste. The largest celebration of Indian cinema in the entire Southern Hemisphere, this year's lineup features more than 50 films in 17 different languages, reflecting the enormous output of the world's largest film producing nation — as well as the incredible diversity of its people.
A major theme of this year's festival is female empowerment. Opening night will showcase contemporary melodrama Parched, billed by director Leena Yadav as a film "about ordinary women who are driven to extraordinary ends". Other films featuring women in prominent roles include box office smash Neerja and closing night film Angry Indian Goddesses, the latter of which was described by one critic as India's "first all-out female buddy movie".
Other standouts include violent serial killer story Raman Raghav 2.0 and controversial political drama Buddha in a Traffic Jam, along with a stream of retro classics starring Bollywood screen legend Rishi Kapoor.
