Your number one destination for paella, sangria, and salsa dancing in the street.

Overview

The Johnston Street Hispanic Latin American Festival is gearing up once again to kick off the summer festival season. From November 15-16, the entire street will be closed off to allow punters to walk the length of the road, stopping for a sangria or Spanish snack along the way.

At this point, the fiesta is an institution. It's been running since the 1970s, and the organisers clearly know how to put on an excellent party. Past years have been characterised by stalls selling Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling masks, and couples salsa dancing on bar tops before the sun has even gone down.

But back to the main event. With everything from empanadas to massive pans of paella to tortillas, it's safe to say the food is incredible. Make sure you arrive hungry. As for entertainment, this will be the first year the festival has two stages, and we plan to spend plenty of time watching the national Latin American dancers and musicians do their countries proud. If you want a fun, cultural, delicious and cheap day out, look no further than Johnston Street.
