Overview

While some restaurants make a lot of noise, some tick away quietly, gradually amassing loyal customers, humbly earning their reputation, and cementing themselves as timeless, classic go-tos. Chez Bagou, situated on unassuming yet upscale Bridport Street in Albert Park, is one such spot that has, over the last eight years, built a devoted following and become one of Melbourne's best French restaurants

Aurelien Bagou opened Chez Bagou in 2018, with plans to bring authentic yet approachable French dining to Melbourne, driven by a desire to bring the true French dining experience — elevated service, genuine hospitality, a proper wine list, and technically sound dishes — to life. Originally from Normandy, Bagou brought more than two decades of experience across Michelin-starred restaurants and fine-dining establishments around the world to his restaurant.

Fast-forward eight years, and Chez Bagou has entered its next chapter with thoughtfully redesigned interiors and an elevated new menu. However, a few important things remain the same. First and foremost, the Head Chef, Guillaume Sauvetre, who has been part of the venue since its inception. Second, the distinctly Parisian spirit with a neighbourhood feel at its heart. And third, certain signature menu items that have become permanent fixtures.

Sauvetre's menu showcases French technique, respecting quality produce and seasonality, through simple, yet flavour-driven dishes that uphold the principles of French gastronomy, delivered through a Melbourne lens.

Mushrooms cigars, which see mushrooms, garlic, and truffle cream rolled in crisp pastry, are a welcome start, followed by the famed prawn brioche with cabbage and the chef's signature sauce. It's a tough choice among classic (and excellent) French onion soup, hand-cut steak tartare, and traditional Burgundy escargot, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

Bagou says, "From traditional bistro favourites to refined seasonal creations, every dish at Chez Bagou reflects the team's passion for authentic French cuisine, generous hospitality and meticulous craftsmanship."

While classic steak frites or chicken cordon bleu filled with smoked ham and comté cheese are expected and safe options, more distinctive dishes include Grampians duck with Jerusalem artichoke puree and lobster bisque, studded with fresh seafood and crowned with puff pastry.

"The restaurant features a charming Parisian-style streetside terrace, a beautifully appointed dining room and an upstairs level that includes two intimate private dining rooms, making Chez Bagou equally suited to casual lunches, romantic dinners, family celebrations and corporate events," says Bagou.

Dessert is certainly no afterthought, with locals known to pop in en route home later in the evening following dinner elsewhere, just to share a classic creme brulee crusted in caramelised sugar, or one of Melbourne's best tarte tatin served simply with vanilla ice cream.

"Whether finishing with a timeless French favourite or one of the chef's signature creations, every dessert at Chez Bagou is crafted with the same philosophy that defines the restaurant, celebrating tradition with elegance, generosity and a touch of creativity," says Bagou.
