Overview
It's a little hard to define Brunswick's newly opened Theodore's, but therein lies its charm. Pegged as a "snack bar and refreshment service", it's part cafe and part watering hole, offering morning coffees, after-dinner drinks and everything you might fancy in between.
Located just off Sydney Road, Theodore's is the brainchild of owners Lily Stokes and Henry Brooks and named after their son Teddy.
All throughout this multi-faceted gem, sustainability remains a key focus. Eighty percent of the menu is vegan and all products are sourced locally and ethically. The pair also has plans to preserve as much seasonal produce as possible in-house, using recipes from Brooks' mother.
The modern Australian food offering comes courtesy of head chef Andy Maybury (Rudimentary), boasting a swag of global influences. And between the 'snack', 'brunch', 'deli' and 'dinnertime' (Thursday to Saturday) menus, there's something here for any type of food craving, at any time of day.
Brunch hits include the likes of the pretzel sandwich ($15) stuffed with vegan 'carrot lox' and red onion — or perhaps a fried egg, onion rings, chipotle and cheese. The $25 a head 'buffet' brunch offering will see you enjoying a hotel-style continental breakfast spread (with yoghurt, fruit, bread basket, cheeses, house-made pickles, fried eggs and a mini pancake stack) while bottomless filter coffee clocks in at an easy $6.
Elsewhere, you'll find mimosas and local brews on tap, snacks like the buffalo-style brussels sprouts ($10) or thrice-cooked spuds ($6), and an Afternoon Wine Club (from 4pm Thursday to Saturday) offering punters the chance to sample rare and interesting drops by the glass.
