Northcote Pottery Supplies
Potter along in this pottery supply shop and studio.
Overview
Northcote Pottery Supplies is your one-stop shop for everything pottery. It's basically a Bunnings or an Ikea for ceramics. It also offers up classes to would-be potters, as well as a space for artists to sell their creations.
If it's clay you need, you'll find it here, with literally dozens of types available. When it comes to tools, it has a huge range of Australian-made ones available, from ribbon tools and turning tools to hole cutters, rolling pins, decorating combs and knives. It sells a large range of stain powder, too, as well as liquid glazes to get that perfect colour. And if you're really serious about your pottery, there are wheels for sale, too, as well as kilns.
Northcote Pottery Supplies' courses include a six-week beginner's course, where newbies will learn the art of wheel throwing, as well as trimming, decorating, glazing and firing. At the end of the six weeks, the students will have a range of pots and bowls they can take home and eat out of.
There are hand-building classes, too, where beginners, intermediates or advanced students can perfect the art of hand-crafting pottery. Here, students will learn how to carve Japanese Kurinuki vessels, play around with decorating techniques and build larger sculptural items. There are also short workshops in case you don't want to commit and would rather just give it a spin, as well as kid's classes and holiday workshops. It's pretty much the only place you need to know for pottery in Melbourne.
