Live Cinema: Safety Last!
For those in tune with both movies and music.
Overview
The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's annual involvement with the NZ International Film Festival sees them recreate the score of classic films in real time. This year will be no different as the ensemble take on Carl Davis' original score of silent comedy Safety Last! and rare short An Eastern Westerner.
1923 romantic comedy Safety Last! is regarded as one of the greatest silent film comedies of all time. Starring Harold Lloyd, the film features one of the most famous images from the era; Lloyd hanging by his hands from a large clock above moving traffic. The film cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in early motion pictures, putting him in the same box as Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.
An Eastern Westerner is a gag-filled comedy, where Lloyd plays the pampered son of New York privilege sent to the Wild West to shape up. The two-reel, 20-minute short is the only 35mm film print of this year's festival programme.
This year's Live Cinema will be the final of the event 2016 New Zealand International Film Festival.
