Loemis Festival: Winter Solstice Ritual
Celebrate the transition to brighter, longer days at this beach solstice ritual.
Overview
This year's Lōemis Festival has been rescheduled for 2021, but organisers have still managed to fit in a pair of events to celebrate the winter solstice. The winter solstice is marked by the shortest day and longest night of the year and has often been associated with regeneration, rebirth and self-reflection. Lōemis typically sees various ritualistic events, including spooky storytelling and the burning of a massive effigy, take place in various locations across the city.
This year, a free winter solstice ritual will take place on Freyberg Beach. Head along from 5pm on the shortest day (Sunday, 21 June) for an hour-long ceremony of live music, theatrics and fire. Field & Green's winter solstice feast is also on the cards for those who would rather stay indoors. The themed degustation will serve up three courses and live music. Tickets are $65.
