Alfred's Pizzeria

Late-night pizza and rock 'n' roll aplenty in this gangsta-themed pizzeria.

Overview

Pizza with a side of cocktails and rock 'n' roll till midnight? Where do we sign? Tucked under a staircase on Barrack is a craft beer haven with eclectic surroundings, a creative cocktail menu, an unpretentious vibe and actually good music. The bar's aesthetic seems to have borrowed a little from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet — with neon signs, a portrait of the Madonna, heaps of candles and plastic greenery — but has a gangster twist, as evident in the photo wall of mug shots. It also has the stereotypical pizzeria features, gingham tablecloths and plastic garlic and chillies, to remind you that you're here for the pies.

And, my, are they delicious. With the basics well and truly covered — perfect chewy dough, tasty tomato sauce from Napoli and the finest fior di latte  the folks at Alfred's can be creative when it comes to toppings. And, they are, with meatballs cacciatore, truffled ricotta, garlic butter and hummus making appearances on the menu. It's far too hard choosing our fave, so just go all out and order as much as you can.

Alfred's takes a similar approach when it comes to liquor, nailing the classics like negronis, manhattans and dark 'n' stormys while offering up something new and refreshing. We suggest ordering the namesake cocktail The Way Alfred Likes It, which features gin, dry vermouth and orange bitters. With a mighty fine wine list and plenty of craft beer you can easily while away an evening here. And, the best part is, the pizzeria slings pies till midnight. Let's face it, there's nothing quite like a late-night cheeseburger pizza.
