Othello

Jealousy, status, weakness, racism, love and innocence - Shakespeare's military play Othello is a 1600s psychological thriller at its best.

Overview

The Lord Lackbeards, Wellington's own touring theatre troupe, are back to present Othello; a tragedy of love, loss and betrayal. What we really like about this troupe is their commitment to Shakespearean theatrical coventions, like universal lighting and a thrust stage. Why travel all the way to the Globe Theatre when you can experience authentic Shakespeare right here in the coolest little capital of the world?

Toi Whakaari graduate, Keagan Fransch, stars in the title role. Having previously performed in The Tempest at the Globe Theatre, we are excited to see what she would bring to Othello under the direction of Ania Upstill.

All this talent will serve to bring Shakespeare's military tragedy to life. Invest in the hard-won love between two people of different races, class and age. Journey through the subtle tensions as Iago painfully exploits the weaknesses of others. Witness Othello's increasing jealousy as contrasted against Desdemona's innocence. This is the 1600s serving up a psychological thriller at its best.
