Don Quixote is based on an episode of Miguel de Cervantes classic novel by the same name. The dance was originally choreographed in Russia by Marius Petipa and first performed in 1869, although it's been tweaked a little bit here and there since. The ballet was brought into mainstream Western culture by famous prima ballerina Anna Pavlova and her company in the 1920s.

Set in Barcelona, the fast and witty ballet follows the hapless dreamer Don Quixote and his side-kick Sancho Panza as they try to aid and abet the lovers Kitri and Basilio. Stellar dancing, a visit from Cupid and the appearance of a very cute shaggy dog ensue.

Don Quixote will be performed at the St James from 4 to 7 March. Ticket prices range from $31.50 to $145.

If you're interested in winning an A reserve double pass to the 7:30pm opening night show on 4 March, email [email protected] with the header 'DON QUIXOTE', your name and contact details and in 25 words or less why you should win. You must be a subscriber to our mailing list to win.
