Overview
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki has been making up for two years of virtual pivots and local showings with many exciting exhibitions of an international flavour this year — who can forget the surreal Brit-themed works from Gilbert and George or this stunning showcase of iconography?
But whether you're an art aficionado or not, a new exhibition coming this spring is set to be the most appealing yet — and there's going to be something for everyone. Aucklanders will get the chance to come face to face with one of the twentieth century's most recognisable icons this spring when a stunning exhibition of Frida Kahlo and Diego Revieras's work comes to the gallery.
Running from Saturday, October, 15 until Sunday, January 22 2023, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera: Art and Life in Modern Mexico presents the work of the famous couple, as well as paintings and photography by leading artists in their circle. More than 150 artworks will be on show, telling a story of love, life and art.
"From Frida's inward exploration of personal identity to Diego's outward interest in national character, learn why – despite very different artistic styles – the pair became two of Mexico's most celebrated and inspiring personalities," Auckland Art Gallery said in a statement.
If you're keen to embrace the full spirit of the exhibition, the gallery will be holding a series of celebratory events to set the scene. Attendees of the opening weekend will be able to enjoy a celebration of Mexican food, music, crafts and art at the gallery. Killing any assumptions you may have about a quiet or stuffy atmosphere while art viewing, you'll be able to enjoy live mariachi music and tacos — and even whip up your own Mexican-inspired crafts with your friends and family. Gallery curator Julia Waite will also be sharing her insights into Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and modern art in Mexico.
Or head in after hours on Wednesday, November 23 for Viva México!, a special after-hours session the gallery is holding with Mexican wine and mezcal bar, La Fuente.
Running 6–9pm, expect an evening of food, wine and mezcal tasting. Once you've eaten your fill — and checked out special after-hours access to the exhibition — you'll be able to dance underneath the stars to music performances by a mariachi band, Ollin Yoliztli dance group and a DJ.
