Taika Waititi’s Vampire Mockumentary Shot Entirely in Wellington

You may know him from such films as Boy and Eagle vs Shark, but for his latest cinematic pursuit kiwi director Taika Waititi has teamed up with Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Concords) for a vampire mockumentary.

What We Do in the Shadows is just a film is about kiwi vampires flatmates - Viago, the old-fashioned vampire, Vladislav the pervert, Deacon the young bad boy and Nick the hipster - figuring out how to live in the modern world: from flat cleaning rosters to paying rent to trying to get into nightclubs like Boogie Wonderland. "There are probably a lot of things that are a hassle for vampires" director Waititi noted during an interview with the Los Angeles Times at Sundance.

The film, which is based on an idea Waititi and Clement had in 2005, follows Wellingtonian vampires around during their mundane day-to-day lives. "Maybe the vampires in the other movies aren't that evil, you just didn't get to know. Maybe they have other interests that you didn't know about... You only see when Dracula goes to kill that virgin at midnight, but what does he do when he's waiting around... maybe he likes to do topiary in his spare time."

What We Do in the Shadows will be in cinemas June 19, 2014.
