Overview

New Zealand has no shortage of streaming services — from major players packed to the rafters with content to niche platforms covering British drama, anime and documentaries. It's difficult to know where to begin. Those wanting something more thoughtful than big-budget blockbusters now have an accessible option as Wellington's beloved Roxy Cinema launches its own pay-per-view movie streaming service.

Roxy OnDemand was launched by the art deco picture palace as a way to extend the in-cinema experience and play films long past their theatrical release. The cinema has partnered with local distributors including Roadshow, Madman, Vendetta, Umbrella, Rialto, Hi Gloss, Potential and NZFC to curate a library of over 350 films.

On the lineup there's acclaimed features like Parasite, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Durkirk, They Shall Not Grow Old and The Gentlemen, plus local films like Come to Daddy, Hunt For the Wilderpeople and Waru. Those still unsure of what to watch can take recommendation from the film-mad staff. The pricing on the platform varies from $4.99 to $7.99 to rent for 14 days.

In the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown, The Roxy has also adapted its Eat the Film concept into an at-home experience. The in-cinema degustation typically sees chef Nic Spicer and his team serve up dishes and cocktails inspired by classic flicks. The new venture allows customers in the Wellington region to order a themed two-course dinner box tied to a movie genre, and designed to be enjoyed in the comfort of their own home theatre.

With delayed film production and film release dates, The Roxy is also exploring new ways to keep its cinemas busy, hiring out its smaller theatre for birthday parties and private viewing sessions.
