This Heartwarming Initiative Needs You to Write Christmas Cards to Lonely Old People

Everyone deserves to experience the joy, wonder and love that comes with the holiday season, no matter how old. Sending Love is a nationwide kindness initiative that aims to send love in an envelope to lonely elderly who may not receive a card or visit from grinch family members this Christmas.

The service currently has around 1,500 cards though needs an estimated 16,000 for those who would appreciate the gesture. To help reach the target, the community initiative has put out the call for enthusiastic writers to spread some yuletide cheer or simply set up a drop box for card collection.

You have until December 14 to write and deliver your card to a dedicated drop box. Sending Love's suggestions for the ideal card include: making sure it's filled with love, being as creative as possible, ensuring it has a legible message, avoiding religious quotes and just being you.

The makeshift post boxes can currently be found in over 20 centres from Whangarei to Winton. Those interested in acting as a drop box for cards should jump on the Sending Love Facebook group and upload a picture of the box and the appropriate address. The New Zealand Aged Care Association will coordinate with all rest homes on the number of cards required when distribution time hits.
