'Madagascar the Musical' Will Sing and Dance Its Way Down Under From August
An all-local cast will bring the story to life, supported by a lavish set, world-class puppets and colourful costumes.
Following the announcements of large-scale production Wicked and doo-wop spectacle Jersey Boys, another smash-hit musical is making its way to New Zealand shores this year. This time, a group of animals escape from their home in New York's Central Park Zoo and find themselves washed ashore an island after a series of misadventures. It can only be Madagascar – the Musical.
Adapted from the 2005 animated motion picture, this musical stage show will land in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in August with all the bells and whistles of the international touring production. An all-local cast will bring the story to life, supported by a lavish set, world-class puppets and colourful costumes.
The musical follows Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippo and a gang of penguins as they leave their comfortable zoo life behind and explore the eponymous island ruled by King Julien. The upbeat score features hits 'Copacabana', 'I Like to Move It', 'Best Friends' and 'Boogie Wonderland'.
Madagascar – the Musical will take the stage at Wellington's Opera House from Thursday, 5 August to Sunday, 15 August and Christchurch's Isaac Theatre Royal from Wednesday, 18 August to Sunday, 22 August. Details for the Auckland season will be announced soon.
