It's a guitar, it's a saxophone, it's a violin, it's a piano; it's all of those things.

Instruments as we know them are transforming at a rapid pace. Inanimate objects like cutlery and foil, as well as fruit and vegetables, can now be played to your hearts desire; data from tennis matches can made be into thumping beats; and bicycle parts can be used to make your own bespoke song.

Running with the futuristic theme, Nashville, Tennesse company Artiphon has successfully raised more than eight times their targeted amount (with a month to go) for a new gizmo that allows the user to play the instrument of their choice, in any style, and in any sound - all while being connected directly to a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

With an objective of creating the most effortless music-making experience for any skill level, INSTRUMENT 1 can be transformed into instruments like: guitar, saxophone, violin, bass, piano and a drum machine; all of which that can be played by gestures like: strumming, tapping, bowing, sliding and fumbling.

With capability to be connected to hundreds of music making apps, it can literally make any sound imaginable through the built-in speakers. It also works with any MIDI-compatible software and Apple's entry level music making programme Garageband.

Those keen to get their hands on an INSTRUMENT 1 have 31 days to contribute to the company's Kickstarter campaign.
