Overview

There's nothing worse than being stuck in a picture palace with those who don't observe social etiquette — from greedy armrest hogs to cinema-goers who decide to bring along an entire three-course meal. For the next two months you won't need to worry about dealing with pesky strangers, as Event Cinemas opens up private screening packages in theatres across the country.

During July and August you can book out your own big screen for $500, which under the 20-person minimum works out at just $20 per person. Each private booking package includes exclusive cinema use in the multiplex of your choice (excluding Rialto cinemas), the movie of your choice, a small popcorn and drink for each guest, plus a host for the event. Additional food and beverage items, including alcohol, can be purchased for an additional expense.

Films on offer range from new releases like Judd Apatow's latest comedy The King of Staten Island and New Zealand gang flick Savage, to cult classics including Fight Club, Titanic and Back to the Future.

In Auckland, the private screening experience is available at theatres in Albany, Newmarket, St Lukes, Queen Street, Manukau, Westcity and Westgate, while Wellingtonians can book out an entire movie house at Embassy Theatre on Kent Terrace.

The private screening package is available during July and August. Make a booking via the Event Cinemas website.
