Overview

The onomatopoeic drinking hole known as 'Meow' is a bit of an everyman's haunt. Bar by night, cafe by day, Meow has a democratic way of catering to all needs, and tastes.

Better known as a live gig venue, Meow's stage has been graced by indie rockers, reggaeton bands, poets and your garden variety local folk artists. It seems the bar-cafe has hosted everything under the sun - except what would perhaps be any justification for its namesake. Concrete Playground regrettably reports that Meow is not a cat cafe, and to date has hosted no cats. The owners could not be reached for further comment.

Moving on. Due to its all-day err-day weekend business hours policy, it's quite possible (and pretty mandatory) to fill your Wellington nights with a rotating variety of Meowish activities and then double back the following day for a great hangover cure (go on, order the eggs benny).

In spite of being excellently well-hidden (you'll have to walk up a dodgy-looking back alleyway before being greeted by any signs of life), Meow has been a cornerstone watering hole for a loyal few over the past few years. However, with little competition in the live music venue arena (RIP Puppies and Mighty Mighty) the cafe-bar is fast gaining popularity.

Now what we're all just waiting for is Meow to cash in on the glorious pun its namesake offers and become New Zealand's first cat cafe. Please.
