Overview

Mark Gee has probably worked on more box office hits than any other New Zealander, with the possible exception of Peter Jackson. So why is he not a household name? Gee works behind the scenes, on digital visual effects including lighting, 3D sequencing, and animation. His greatest hits include big hitters Avatar, King Kong, The Hobbit, Narnia, I Robot, Peter Pan and Inspector Gadget. The guy should be a national celeb. And now he is bringing his latest works to the Carter Observatory for your inspection.

When he isn't working in film, Gee’s passion is astrophotography. Basically taking rad pictures of the night sky. His latest Art of Night collection is a sequence of 26 of Gee’s favourite astro photos from throughout his experience as a photographer. A spread that covers night skies from all over the nation, the photographer has travelled near and far away from his Wellington home to obtain images that capture the ethereal beauty of the New Zealand night sky.

The exhibition had Gee chosen as the 2013 Astronomy Photographer of the Year, and named as a finalist in the 2012 World Open of Photography. He also made fourth place in the 2014 International Earth and Sky Photo Competition lately. Not bad for a self-taught photographer.
