Overview

The Chinese New Year Festival is back for the Year of the Rat, hitting Wellington February 1–2 with a host of events taking place down at the waterfront and through Courtenay Place.

The major holiday for many Asian cultures is a time to gather together with people special to you and partake in good food, good entertainment and celebrate good luck, fortune, happiness, wealth and longevity.

Coming to New Zealand's capital this year is a full program including food, music, dance, art and activities for you to enjoy along with your mates or family.

Many of the events within the festival are either free or gold coin entry. Highlights include the East Meets West show at 4pm on February 1 at the TSB Bank Arena and the Festival Fireworks at 9.30pm on Wellington Waterfront — also on February 1.

The festival Facebook page is a good place to go for the schedule and updates about different events.
