Overview

French Filmmaker Julia Georgia Bernard will give audiences a unique insight into the glittering glamour of Parisian couture, conducting a Q&A session after the premiere of her film, Handmade with Love in France.

First-time feature filmmaker Julie Georgia Bernard’s documentary Handmade with Love in France is a celebration of the Parisian artisans who create haute couture outfits for the likes of Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Dior, and an exploration of the goings on once the workshops have closed their doors.

The film has already seen both local and international success, with a very well received première at the Vancouver International Film Festival, and dubbed “the best film at this year’s French Film Festival” by the New Zealand Herald’s Viva Magazine.

Handmade with Love in France will be showcased during the 2015 Alliance Française French Film Festival. The festival's official line-up for this year is dominated by films from new directorial voices, and in particular, films directed by women. Ten feature films other than Bernard's are helmed by female directors, including Eden by Mia Hansen-Løve (Father of My Children), Sex, Love and Therapy by Venus Beauty Institute’s Tonie Marshall, My Summer in Provence by Rose Bosch and the debut film from Jeanne Herry, Elle l’Adore, starring Sandrine Kiberlain and Laurent Lafitte.

As part of the Stars of Tomorrow Program, Bernard will conduct a Q&A session after the Wellington premiere of her film. The programme, which is set up under the umbrella of the Alliance Française French Film Festival, lets an aspiring new French filmmaker or actor chosen by the festival team to travel to New Zealand to promote their film and to participate in Q&A sessions and special events as a means of encapsulating the spirit of the festival, and creating a legacy for the chosen talent.
