Overview

Hardening forms part of an ongoing project, revisiting the biography of Dr. Hjelmar von Danneville. Wellington-based artist Aliyah Winter uses moving image, performance and archival research to tell a story through her own eyes. The exhibition frequents historical ideas of gender and sexuality, and the role that nonconformity played in the modern medicine of the early 20th century.

Exploring the importance of place through the settings of Matiu Island and the long-closed Lahmann Health Home at Mirimar, Winter starts a conversation about understanding health, healing, desire and belonging in our present culture.

The exhibition is presented during Wellington Pride Festival, Tū Whakahīhī e Te Whanganui-ā-Tara, to celebrate the diversity of our city. There will also be a walk and talk with Winter on Matiu Island throughout the exhibition, which is limited to 20 places to give the hikers a chance to continue the conversation of conformity in our community.
