Overview

If you like animated films, then you won't want to miss the monthly screenings of wildly successful Japanese anime in the Wellington CBD.

This month, the Japanese film night features well-known Japanese animated film, Ponyo. Like the 2003 international sensation, Spirited Away, Ponyo has lived up to the hype of its sister films by Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki.

This 2008 Studio Ghibli release tells the story of a young boy named Sosuke who rescues a goldfish from a jam jar. The goldfish is eager to become a human like Sosuke, and this tale follows their unlikely friendship from the human world into an underwater ocean adventure.

The film will feature English subtitles and run for a crowd-pleasing 100 minutes. This G-rated film is appropriate for all ages, and like many of Miyazaki's films, is appreciated by adults. If you think you're too old for animated films, think again.

The showing is taking place at the Embassy of Japan on Tuesday 30 January at 6pm. A pre-showing video about varies Japanese topics will play at 5.45pm before the beginning of the feature film. This free event is on a first in, first served basis.
