Wellington Waterfront

Queens Wharf, Wellington

It's back. Aotearoa's leading celebration of culture is returning to Wellington. Held every two years, get ready to experience world class entertainment in the arts including dance, theatre and music. Although the festival is packed full of incredible events, this year's opening night, Kupe, is an evening you need to mark on your calendar.

Acknowledging our history and our place in the Pacific, creators of this event Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr, Anna Marbrook and Kasia Pol take inspiration from and pay homage to the great explorer and navigator Kupe.

Gracing our waters after months at sea, welcome in a formidable fleet of waka that have voyaged from Samoa, the Cook Islands and around New Zealand. You'll also be able to experience theatrical performances, a mass choir and a rousing 1000-strong haka.

Starting at 7pm on the Wellington waterfront, come and experience what is set to be a beautiful, energetic and moving start to the beginning of the New Zealand Festival.
