Overview
With a history of sold out seasons, standing ovations and a four-star review at the world's most respected dance festival, The New Zealand Dance Company presents Lumina in Wellington. The piece features the work of three of New Zealand's most dynamic creative forces when asked to create a world where light is the interlinking force. This rich world, an explosion of illumination, imagery silhouetted by the world of contemporary dance is a work of artistic vision.
The first piece, Brouhaha, is created by Malia Johnston, past World of Wearable Art Stage Director and Principle Choreographer, in collaboration with her long standing creative partners- composed Eden Mulholland and audio-visual designer Rowan Pierce. It's a vibrant, energetic world that paints dancer as explorer and "artful unraveler."
In Transit is the work of Louise Potiki Bryant. The winner of the Harriet Friedlander Residency in 2014, Bryant works with her composer and audio-visual designer Paddy Free to create a thoughtful piece, a reflection of the traces left behind in the Maori ritual of encounter.
Stephen Shropshire rounds out Lumina with the company's first international commission, in co-production with the Holland Dance Festival. Chris O'Connor, composer and also a member of The Phoenix Foundation collaborated to produce Geography of an Archipelago. A trio of dancers explore the emotions of belonging, but equally as important- exile.
