Overview

UPDATE: 11 March, 2021: Lumino City has now been postponed until 15–16 October, 2021.

Wellington Lantern Festival typically marks the arrival of Chinese New Year, transforming Lower Cuba Street into a glowing channel lined with hundreds of handmade lanterns. This year, the kaleidoscopic event is heading back under the new name of Lumino City. From 15–16 October, Wellington's waterfront will light up from end to end as life-size lanterns and installations take over the pavement.

As travel is restricted around the globe, the organisers of Wellington Lantern Festival invite you to discover a whole new world in Lumino City. Thirty enormous lanterns and displays will represent 12 different countries — get lost in the streets of Italy, watch out for the dragons of Indonesia and say g'day to our friends across the ditch.

Live performances will cover three stages and accompany the dazzling light displays, while food spanning a multitude of cultures will be available from local vendors. Festival organisers are expecting to beat last year's attendance number of 85,000 at the two-night festival.
