Overview

The New Zealand Deaf Short Film Festival is back for 2015, with the filmmaking competition, screenings and awards gala entering its seventh year. The subtleties of communicating on a film set are an afterthought for most. Throw in production management, wrangling gear and directing a cast and you can see why the NZDSFF is a valuable opportunity for the deaf and hard of hearing community to participate and compete in the filmmaking process; as well as a useful platform for budding filmmakers to cut their teeth.

Highlights from the festival programme include a showcase of the 2015 entries in competition at Nga Taonga Sound & Vision with Friday's 6pm screening followed by a Q&A panel giving audience insight into creative measures taken to jump obstacles that face the filmmakers. New Zealand Film & Television School will screen a selection of films, including award winning Austrian film The Wall, host a discussion forum on the barriers that face deaf and hard of hearing people entering and working in the New Zealand film industry and form home base for the Mobile Film Making Competition – teams of four are given three hours to make a film equipped solely with a smartphone.
