Overview
You might have seen the country's leading professional orchestra perform during lockdown via its series of live-streamed concerts. Now is your opportunity to see world-class orchestral music in the flesh. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will take the stage at Michael Fowler Centre on Friday, 26 June for a free live concert.
Ngū Kīoro Harikoa Ake is a celebration of the enormous effort New Zealanders made to protect the vulnerable and eliminate COVID-19. Internationally renowned tenor Simon O'Neill and rising soprano Eliza Boom will join the orchestra for an evening of classics from Bizet's 'Carmen', Puccini's 'La Bohème' and Verdi's 'Otello'.
Gareth Farr's 'From the Depths Sound the Great Sea Gongs' and John Psathas' ecstatic 'Tarantismo' will also feature, while vocalist Maisey Rika and taonga pūoro specialist Horomona Horo perform music from the NZSO's 2019 'An Instrumental Voyage Pae Tawhiti, Pae Tata' concert.
The full power of the orchestra will be on show for Richard Strauss' inspirational 'Suite' before all guest soloists and singers from Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir come together for a special finale of the beloved waiata 'Pōkarekare Ana'.
