Overview
What's more eerie than listening to arts performances in an ex-ward of the old Wellington Fever Hospital? Taking suggestions, because we can't think of anything.
Old Hall Gigs is an organisation that puts together roving performances of bands, art and readings in unfamiliar Wellington venues. While "gigs" makes you think of musical performances, Old Hall Gigs is largely about calibrating an evening composed of different mediums of art — whether musical, spoken or visual activity.
For Old Hall Gig #17, the old walls of the Fever Hospital Ward will ring with a performance by Pales, ghost stories read by Baz Macdonald from Vic Books, and some spooky new poetry from Chris Tse.
Pales is the musical assembly of Rose Blake, Mike Isaacs and Scott Maynard. They take inspiration from musicians such as Tiny Ruins, Other, Seth Frightening, Elliott Smith, Angel Olsen, Grizzly Bear and D'Angelo, combining a unique range of skills from their diverse musical backgrounds, including both jazz and classical training, with a wide and varied instrumentation to create intricate and evocative folk compositions.
The Old Hall Gig is also the same night as the Wellington Harbour Fireworks. At interval, everyone will trek up to a spot to watch the fireworks. BYO torch.
The Ward is inside the Wellington SPCA and the bar will be run on the night by the SPCA in order to "give all the animals a nice Christmas."
