Overview

Southern Cross Garden Bar have got a good thing going with their series of Outdoor Movie Nights. The monthly fixture has drawn record "attending" crowds on their Facebook events, and packed out their garden bar month after night with an eclectic cinema selection.

September's offering looks to be just as popular. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Terry Gilliam's black comedy road trip film has become a cult classic since its release in 1998. Johnny Depp plays Raoul Duke, a journalist and Benicio del Toro a lawyer named Dr. Gonzo. The two embark on a drug-fuelled drive from LA to Las Vegas. They sink further and further into a psychedelic, binged underworld as they follow a motorcycle race Duke has been commissioned to write about. The colourful yet haunting characters they encounter equate to a glimpse into an otherworld portrayed to great effect by almost hallucinatory cinematography and a score of tunes by such artists as Bob Dylan, Three Dog Night and The Youngbloods.

The event is R18, so bring an ID. Bean bags, movie snacks and hot water bottles are provided.
