The Night of Ideas
Philosophers, scientists, sociologists, psychologists, legal experts and artists gather to discuss some of today’s most significant issues.
Overview
In 2016, the Institut Français, launched a special worldwide event, that brought together a spectrum of experts to discuss significant global issues at "La Nuit des Idées" – The Night of Ideas. From its launch, the events saw philosophers, artists and scientists join collective conversations worldwide across the globe. Since then, The Night of Ideas has been held in 65 countries, with more than 200,000 attendees.
This year, the Embassy of France in New Zealand is proud to present the first Franco-Kiwi edition of The Night of Ideas in our very own Wellington Botanic Gardens. The global theme for 2019 will be "Facing Our Time". In New Zealand this theme will be directed to focus on the relationship between humankind and nature, with panel discussions, guest speakers and artistic explorations tackling these ideas. Amongst the list of guest speakers this year are Michelle Dickinson, aka "Nanogirl", Emmanuel Tjibaou, an expert in cultural dialogue, and Dr. Danielle Shanahan, Zealandia's Manager of Conservation, Research and Learning.
The Night of Ideas will begin around 8pm on January 31 at The Dell in the Gardens (behind the Begonia house). No doubt this will be a night to think together, and one to remember.
