Indian Ink Theatre Company are back with a touching tale about love, death and preserves. Their previous productions, including Krishnan's Dairy, Kiss the Fish and The Guru of Chai, have been widely applauded and awarded for bursting with vitality and outlining what it means to live in a diverse society.

The Pickle King is a vintage Indian Ink script, dusted off and updated for their twentieth anniversary. The plot now centres around a same sex couple. If the original piece had this plot point, the play would have been a controversial statement at the time. Now, Indian Ink says, "Today it just reflects the diverse culture of New Zealand."

The fable combines pathos with belly laughs to celebrate the hilarity and wonder of human resilience. Sasha, the blind receptionist of the archaic Empire Hotel, laments everything she loves dying. But when true love finds her, she can't help but fall. One night, Death checks into the hotel. The fable highlights the injustices of immigration and globalisation, and having the courage to love, no matter your gender.

The Pickle King is the company's most awarded play, among the accolades an Edinburgh Fringe First, seven Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards (a record), and the supreme accolade of Production of the year.
